Merle E. Barstad, Sr.

MERLE E. BARSTAD SR., age 76, of Waseca died Friday, January 31, 2020, in Waseca.

Born on August 23, 1943, in Thief River Falls to Einar and Christine (Hegrenes) Barstad. Merle attended Thief River Falls High School, graduating with the class of 1961. He continued his education at Brown Institute where he studied radio broadcasting. Following his education Merle moved to Glendive, Montana where he worked in radio broadcasting before entering the auto parts industry with NAPA. While living in Glendive, Merle was united in marriage to Joyce Bell on June 2, 1963. Merle served in the National Guard from 1966 – 1972. After returning to Minnesota, he worked in the parts department at Iten Chevrolet in Brooklyn Center. In 1975, Merle and Joyce moved to Waseca. Merle worked in the parts department at Countryside Motors in Waseca until 1992. He then moved to Becker until retiring in 2015. Merle enjoyed HAM Radio, Minnesota Sports and spending time with his grandchildren. He attented Christ Community Church in Waseca.

Merle is survived by his children: Merle (Heidi) Barstad Jr. of Waseca and DeLain Draeger (fiance, Michael Castor) of Waseca; six grandchildren: Alexander, Jacob, and Aliyah Barstad and Kendra, Brittney, and Kelsey Draeger. Preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, June Sorenson.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Christ Community Church in Waseca with Pastor Rick Wulf officiating. Interment will be in Woodville Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
